"X"

In class today we had a great discussion about Malcolm X and his fight for equality during the 1960's. Did you agree with the "black power" movement as an alternative for African-Americans that did not believe Martin Luther King Jr's, non-violent movement was affective? If you were alive during the civil rights movement how would you have helped gain equality of all citizens in the United States, would you have helped at all?

Yes I think the black power movement was effective. I think it was very effective because in the story we read they were trying to get people to vote and they brought people down from the city to protect them. It made its point and was very empowering. But I think that we could have still won the freedom without the black power movement. We did need a little violence to win but not that much.

From your stoogy servant ALEX:(

P.S. They barely used that much violence in comparison to the KKK.

I think the black power thing made people nervous and realize that they had been treating them so bad that they wanted to fight back, but Martin Luther King Jr's way got people's attention and got people to really think about it like "we threat them bad and they're just marching, not killing or revenge". They really sent their message clear that they want peace and we're not giving it to them. Malcolm X gave them the thought that your not treating us good we want revenge!

I think that Malcom X was partially right because I think they should have done something about what was happening, but I don't know a lot about that yet because we still haven't learned about the rest of it. If I were alive back then, I would have tried to talk to someone on the white side and tell them what we were going through. If that didn't work, than I would have went with what Martin Luther King Jr. did. (I don't really have any ideas of what I would do). 16 days until Christmas!!!!!

I do not believe that the black power movement was a good alternative because you shouldn't use violence to fight for something. Martin Luther King was more peaceful with his acts so people took him more seriously.

If I was alive during the civil rights movement I would have protested and marched with Martin Luther King Jr. I would also be friends with African-Americans and give them support. I would have shown other people that we are all equal.

I would prove the white people wrong by doing someting that they think i can't do.Yes i would help because it's not fare to do things black people can't do. also it is cruel to be owned by someone you don't know that well.noone should be able to own someone else.

#1. I don't agree with it because fighting is never the answer and Martin Luther King's peaceful plan would of eventually won. But I also think if you didn't like what Martin Luther king was doing and you wanted to help you could join them.

#2. Yes. I would of helped because every person makes a difference. Also I would of joined Martin Luther King, and protested , and boycotted , and made sings. I think being peaceful a good way to protest.

P.S. Do anyone know why every first time I try to type the word verification it says I'm wrong and every second time it says I'm right??? 8( I just don't get it.

Yes I do think that it had a good effect on the states.Maybe because he didn't think that was right that they could just boom their houses so why can't they boom their houses. By going to rallys and the march on washington and stuff like that.

I'm with Martin Luther King's non-violent movement because it was most likely that I wasn't going to get hurt and it's more peaceful. I do get what Malcome X was saying that he wanted freedom, but you don't need violence to get it. Also, I think you can protest without violence but like Alex said, you do need a little violence. So, I don't agree with "black power".
If I were alive back then I would be friends and on the side of african/american people. Like Katherine said I would show we are equal and there is no bigger person.
