Characters in "The Cay"

We have met a few characters in "The Cay" so far. Phillip, his mom and dad, and Henrick van Boven. Pick one to tell me about.

How would you describe him or her.
What adjectives would you use?
Tell me what evidence from the book helps you to get a picture of this character in your mind.

I am going to describe Philip's mom. I would describe her as a very aware and protective person. The reason I say protective is that she is very cautious about Philip. I would use the adjectives of nervous, informed, and is very careful. The evidence that I found is that she wrings her hands and makes sure Philip does what she tells him to do (or at least tells him to do things, he doesn't always listen). My other evidence is that she is making herself and Philip leave the island. That shows how much she hates living in Curacao, because it is very risky to sail because they could be torpedoed. I am liking the book so far!!!

I like Henrick! I would say he is very sad right now.I would say that because he is so serious about everything. But the most importent part is that his country was taken over by the Nazis.I see Henrick as pudgy.

Phillip is a character in the book I chose and the adjectives I would choose for him is very ADVENTUROUS and very OBLIVIOUS to the war. He thinks the war is all a game. But finally, he realized war can be horrible and violent when he saw the torpeedo hit a ship. I think he is very adventurous because he always wants to go out and watch everything going on on the island and hideout in the old fort with Henrick van Boven. Again, he is very oblivous that there is a war going on and he can get seriously hurt.
Ms. Simonds, here is the reason I think that Phillip's mom is NOT racist.... I think Phillip's mom is not racist because she used to live in Virginia, America and that's kind of different from where they live at the moment (or a chapter ago...) and I think that's kind of hard when you change different people like that. In Virginia, there probably wasn't alot of African/American people there. So what I'm trying to say is that it's kind of a hard transition to mostly whites to mostly blacks.

I am writing about Phillip's mom.

His mom sounds like all she wants to do is be safe. She is VERY cautious.Like when Phillip went to were his mom told him not to. When she found out she was really really mad. Also she is racest. Like when she said that Phillip should not hang around the black people.

I am going to describe Phillip, he is a very curious person and is not really afraid of a lot of things, he is one of those kids that likes to do things on his own because one example is when his mom told him to not go outside in the beginning of the book because there was war boats and they had to put up the blackout curtains and and he went out when his mom was putting the blackout curtains and stood where the ships would be coming in I think??

I describe Phillip's dad as a smart, hard-working father. He is very loving, mentally strong and devoted to his job. I think that he will go bonkers until Phillip and Grace are back. He hates the Nazis after they torpedoed Empire Turn. I believe Phillip's dad have to fight the Nazis if they attack. Hendelson/Hendelberry//Hernie hold the applause people

I disagree with Alex because I think that Henrick is not serious. The reason I say that is his mom seems very happy because she doesn't get mad at Henrick for going to the potoon bridge, etc. I I do agree, though, that he is pudgy because they say so in the book. Now, I want to know why Alex said the most important part is that his country was taken over by the Nazis. I do think that is important, but I want Alex to tell me why. Which Alex is this anyway? Also, I don't think that Henrick is very serious. Actually, to me he sounds like his mother, very happy and fun.

Wow! You wake up early Mrs Simonds. That is 3 hours before I get up.
I want to tell you about Timothy. He is African American like me. He tells Philip what is surrounds him and what to do because he went blind. Philip went up to the edge and put his face in to cool off and fell in. Timothy yelled shark skark swim to me calling him bass trying to help philip. Timothy jumped in the water to help Philip. Timothy is friendly and also poor. He is smart because he knows how much water to give Philip wile they wait. I like timothy. Mullet man Noah

#1. I'm going to describe Phillip. I would describe him as someone who is hard to get along with but can be a good friend once you get to know him. I would use the adjectives, annoying (sometimes), hateful, and loving (only to some people).

#2. The evidence that I found is like when he was asking Timothy about what was in the water and what the sky looked like, I can see him being gentle. But like when he was telling his mother he hated he and when he was yelling at Timothy,I can see him being mean and aggressive.

I am going to describe Timothy, he is a very smart and strong guy he may be a little stubborn at times. Sometimes I feel he is young for his age because is so ripped and his accent is cool so that also makes him sound younger. He is always saying things that keep you going encouraging like "i know there will be a schooner coming by today" or "theres probably and island up ahead" I think Timothy is very nice man.

Well I already wrote on this one so im just going to say what I think of the book so far!!!
This book is very interesting. I don't think it could get any better! It must be hard for Phillip because he is blind! Phillip is missing alot of things he could be seeing like where he is and stuff like that. It is very sad for Phillip cause he is going to miss seeing amazing things:(

Well I would have to say Phillip because... he is the main character. Also I like him because he is still a kid. That means he doesn't understand that a war is a bad thing. also his mom is just like my mom. Caring, I also like the his name. Phillip.

I am going to describe Philip's dad. I would describe him as a very hard worker and a loving and caring parent. The reason I said a hard worker was because he works a lot! The book said he works from 3:00AM until 9:00PM that's a really long work day! The reason why I said a loving and caring parent was because he really loves and cares for Philip. The book shows that when he has tears in his eyes when Philip and his mom are leaving on the ship.

I have to agree with J dog.Philip's mom is all those charaterrists.I would say that she is racist.I would say that because Philip says that Timothy is a stupid BLACK man. Also in one part Phillip says my mother hates the island [blah blah blah] and she does not like the black people.I would also think that she is very selfish.Like when she wants to leave the island and the father says no.She says you don't love me.

Hey everybody,
The SECOND person I'm choosing is Phillip's mama. I think she is a nervous, worried mother. In my other blog I stated Phillip was oblivious to the war and I think that she believes that too. When Phillip told her the truth about him wandering around the island she was mad at him, but all of a sudden she wasn't and was hugging him. That shows she is a worried person.
I think she is a worried person because they left Curacao and she was very NERVOUS that Phillip, his dad and herself was to get hurt. That shows she is a worried person.

I am doing mine on Phillip.

I would describe Phillip as scared because he is thinking that he may be stuck on the island forever and may never get his sight back. I also think he's mad that he is stuck with a black man.
The adjectives I would use to describe Phillip are mad, sad, scared and he is basically homeless now, so homeless.
I know what Phillip looks like because he is on the cover, but in the book he says that he thinks his hair feels ropey and he knows his clothes are ripped.

Well I'm starting to like (I'm going to say a character that was not in the story at that time.)Timothy more than Phillip because... Timothy is more of a wiser person then Phillip. I still like Phillip but I think Timothy is a little cooler person.I think he is cooler because he knows a lot about the water and sea. And Phillip he use to think war was a cool thing. War is never cool.well I just wanted to say I think Timothy is a little more cooler than Phillip

I thought of describing philip. When I saw the first chapter she was very protective of philip and she was kind. When philip's mom was trying to find philip she was very cautious about philip.I thought she was very gentle, kind, and worries a lot.She was cautious about her and philip leaving the island.
