The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going

We started our new read-a-loud today, a realistic fiction book called
" The Liberation of Gabriel King" by K.L.Going. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/039923991X.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
In the first chapter the author really sets up the story by giving you much information on the setting as well. She also introduces you to the two main characters, Gabe and his best friend Frita. My discussion questions for you are the following:

1.Which character interests you the most after just one chapter and why?
2. Tell me what you learned about the setting and why or how you think this setting might be important to the story?

Duke because he bullies the person and you don't know why. He's dads really against blacks so i think he just follows He's dad.

I think the setting is important because its in a place where there was Intergation and It took place a long time ago.

I agree with Ben because you wonder why he bullies people. Also, you think parents won't bully you but his dad is just as bad as him. You wonder what goes on around him at his home.

I think setting is important because there is history in each place in the world and different places may effect people in different ways.

#1: Frida because she is really tough and it kind of left me on a cliff hanger because after she punched the bully I want to know what will happen and what her real life is like at home.

#2: I think the setting is important because it took place a long time ago and that is when lots of fights were happening.

The character that interests me most is Frita because she is a really brave girl the way she stands up to bullies. She doesn't let them bother her, and I like how she ignores them.

The setting in the story is important because it tells us when and where the story takes place. We know it was a long time ago because there was separation between blacks and whites. It was in Georgia and you get the feeling that people weren't very nice to blacks then.

#1. I am interested in Frieda because she is so tough and brave I want to know what she will do in the future.

#2. I think the setting is very important because there was more integration in the part of the country they were in.

1.I also agree with Ben and Sarah because he is a really mean bullies people. I wonder if he follows his dad about hating black people. I also wonder about his social live.

I think that it was a really great setting because it has a lot of cool history.A lot of bad and mean history too.

#!. The character that interests me most is Freita because she sounded really tough because she punched the bully and the book said that Duke would not bully Gabe if Freita was there. And it makes me want to learn more about her.

I think the setting is important because if it was somewhere else the white people might be nicer to the black people and there might not of been intergation.

1. I think that Gabe was a most nice and thoughtful character, because he was very kind to his best friend Frita.

2.The setting is that the bully's were very mean to Gabe because that it was very scary at school.

freda iterest me the most because she got put in a all white school and her teacher is very fond of her and yet she takles duke, nearly knocking him out cold.

I learned that it is 1976 and that might have a efect on freda because she is black and people weren't very nice to blacks back then.
