Character Changes

In our class read aloud, we talked about how we noticed some characters changing their attitudes.  Character development is something we are working on in our writing as well.

In Maniac Magee, one of our earlier read alouds, one of the characters, Mars Bar, started out as quite a bully.  He was nasty to Maniac.  Throughout the story, Maniac had various interactions with Mars Bar.  Towards the end of the story, Mars Bar begins to respect Maniac, and they really become friends.

Discussion Points:

1. From Schooled, pick a character and talk about any small changes that they may have made recently.  Be sure to give examples from our reading.

2.  From your own reading, or from a previous book you have read independently, discuss how a character changed throughout the story.  Be sure to use examples from your reading to back up your claim.

From Schooled, Naomi has changed. She has gone from hating Cap because of Zack, to listening to herself.
In my book, The Two Towers, Strider has changed to a fighter who will defend his friends. Strider used to be the man in Bree who hid in the shadows. Now Strider has gone from helping Frodo, to fighting to help all his companions. My example, is when Strider yells at the strange elves who threaten to behead Gimli.

Dear Mrs. Simonds,
I'm going to talk about Neighomi. At the beginning of the story she thought it was sort of mean what everyone was doing to Cap, but she kept to Zack's side.
I think throughout the story she realizes that it does not matter if she is with Zach or not, that she should do what she thinks is right. Not what Zach thinks.
In the book I AM LISTENING WITH A BROKEN EAR it is about a mom and her daughter that find a dog that has been living in the wild for a couple of years. She does not like Honeybun (the dog] but lets Ashlyn (her daughter) take care of Honeybun for a while.
They have to tame her and give her surgery even though they are very poor. During that time she learns to love Honeybun.

Hi Mrs. Simonds
1. I'm going to talk about CAP. He has made a couple of adjustments 1. He now knows 56 people's names because zach had taught him all the bullies' names that tease him. 2. He has also adjusted to being more like unhippie if that was a word.
2. I'm going to talk about the book Summer Ball by Mike Lupica and the main character Danny. Danny had to make adjustments to a basketball camp that he had taken over the summer. That was getting use to the bullies all around him, he never knew when a kid would start bulling kids Dannys size. Danny was small but he was good at B-Ball. He also had to adjust to the coaches there because they are really strict. They are always making the kids do so much work. Danny really wanted to go home but then he found out some good things about camp, there is free food and his girlfriend is right across the lake from his campus because he lives on a lake.

Hi Mrs.S
I think Naomi has recently made some changes about the way she is hanging around with Capricorn Anderson instead of Zach Powers. For example, when Cap was driving the school bus to the hospital he asked for directions and Naomi was the only one to give them to him. In the book, The Batboy, by Mike Lupica, the main character Brian went from not being fond of his hero Hank to liking him a lot more than he would have if he didn't become the batboy. I say this because in the beginning of the book Hank was full of him self and walking around acting like he is cooler than every body else on the team. At the end of the book hank skipped one of his games as an MLB player to go see Brian's game because Hank likes Brian's mom and also Brian got Hank out of his terrible slump that could have ended his career.

Hi Mrs.Simonds,
1. I think Naomi has changed a little. She has because in the beginning of the book, she was following Zack's foot steps. Naomi was helping Zack tell Cap lies like, we will have a meeting in the writing room after school, when it was really something like the library. Naomi also gave her last respects to a bird with Cap Zack put in Caps locker to be funny and mean.
2. In the book Smile by Raina, the character Riana is a shy 8 or 9 year old girl who lost her tooth by falling on tar. When she is in collage, she changes because, her two front teeth get fixed and now shes not afraid to show her SMILE. Riana also changes because shes braver than she was when she was 8 or 9. Because she has backup to help her through the path of life are her friends and boyfriend. Riana changed a lot!!

1. Cap used to not have any friends and know he is really popular. A lot of people said he is a hero saving the bus driver. Also he taught people how to tie die shirts.

2. In my book there is a girl named Lily. She used to be the most popular girl but not any more. People saw a picture of her from a few years ago but people don't like her because she used to be big. Now the other popular girls are trying to avowed her.

Hola Mrs. Simonds,
The character I'm going to chose is Naomi. The biggest change that Naomi has gone through is her feelings toward Cap!!! At the beginning she likes Cap but decides that if she is going to hang out with Zack she needs to just avoid Cap!!!
At first my character Bobby thought that he was just a fat outsider. But now he has is learning that he needs tostand up for what he believes in instead of just being a get along guy!!! I love this book it is awesome.
Happy Reading Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Mrs.S,

1. I pick Naomi for a changed character because in the beginning of the book Naomi did not like Cap. Then when Naomi said "Be careful some of us kids are not so nice", that is when I had noticed Naomi had changed.
2. In the book Claws, Emma changes from being a normal girl to a human/cat girl. She had decided to do that change so she could save her sister. In some stories that I have read, some characters do not change, but I think that it is very rare for that to happen.

Dear Mrs.Simonds,
I think Niomi has changed alot because she used to hate Cap, but now they are more of friends. In "Magyk" by Angie Sage, Boy 412 used to try to run away, but he started to like the Heaps. Sorry that this is short but we only had 2 discussion points.

Hello Mrs. Simonds,
I think that Naomi is starting to be more like Cap. I think this because, now she is starting to do Cap's dances, (which I don't remember what they are called) she tie-dyed with him, and when the police came on the bus bus she was the first to stand up to them.
In my book "The Name Of The Star" a teacher named Mr. Everst, used to be very strict and mean, but now even if you sneak out of the school he won't get mad at you.

1. From schooled I am going to talk about Caps small changes. Some of them are: having to live with the donellys, Rain breaking her hip, going to school, being the 8th grade president, and lots more.

2. In my book the main character, Callie changed a lot. She changed by speaking up for herself, not being shy, and making lots of new friends witch help her with that.

Hi Mrs.S

I'm picking Sophia Donele. She has gotten nicer to Cap because she prayed with Cap when a person put a dead bird in his locker. When Cap tried to put one on of Sophia's beauty products it wasn't the right one. Sophia helped him put on the right beauty product. None of my characters in my book have changed.

Hi Mrs Simonds
1) In the book Schooled one of the character that changed is Naomi. One of the changes was when she stopped sending Cap to rooms in the school that don't exist even when the popular people do. Another small change is when she starts becoming more friendly to Cap. Sophie is also a character that changes throughout the story so far. One change is when she doesn't yell at Cap when he is on the couch after Cap taught her how to drive. Or when she gave Cap advice about the shampoo.
2) In the book Truth Truman School one of the characters name is Lily. One example is when Lily is not hanging out with her usual friends. Another change about Lily is when she is being more nicer to everyone instead of just her usual friends.

To Mrs. Simonds,
1.The character I would pick is going to be Niomi. I piked Niomi because I think she has done a changed and that change could change the book. The change is that Niomi is starting to like Cap and feel bad for him. I think this could change the book because Niomi could stand up to Zack Powers. I think that because in the book Niomi says "I am starting to feel bad for Cap Niomi says to her self".
2. I think Matilda has changed by only being able to read the newspaper to be reading grown up books. oIn the book it says "by the time Matilda was three she taught her self to read the newspaper around her house."

To Mrs. Simonds and Riley,
For the first question I thought Riley was right about what he said. I think he gave a great example. I think Riley could have also said another reason about how Naomi has changed for an example Naomi has changed by not wanting to bully Cap as much. Although I think Naomi is stating to like Cap. I also have a perdition that Naomi will stand up for Cap against Zack Powers.
For the second question I do not really have anything to say about the second question but I think I will like to read the book, Batboys.

Dear Mrs. Simonds,

I would like to comment on some peoples blogs. I agree with Lucy in the beginning of the story that Naomi thought that it was mean what people were doing to Cap, but Naomi kept to Zach's side. I also liked Biz's comment on how much Cap has changed. I liked Naomi as a character more after she changed, but Cap may have changed more.

Josh you are right. Noami used to hate Cap but now she has changed. You also have taught me something about Boy 412 because I knew nothing about him!
I'm not sorry about this being a short blog. This is why I have nothing much to say...

Hi Mrs. S
It seems that most people chose Naomi, so I am choosing Hue. Hue has changed from a person who tells Cap everything he needs to know about being 8th grade president. Now he is telling Cap pretty much nothing, I think Hue is doing this so he doesn't become the main target by the bullies.
In the book that I'm reading the main character Will has changed a lot. At the beginning of the story Will did not want Hannah to play on on the football team. Now that she is on the team Will actually likes her and is happy that she is on the team.
