First or Third?

Hello Room Full of Readers!

What an exciting day, the day after the election! I enjoyed our advisory time today, hearing your thoughts, comments and reflections about this year's election and issues.
I also enjoyed our workshop on point of view.  I am so glad you enjoyed "Voices in the Park", and am looking forward to reading it again with you tomorrow and focusing on the pictures and tone of each voice.
We talked today about first-person  and third-person points of view.  Brianna mentioned that "Voices" is told in multiple first-person voices. We also read the beginning of "Charlotte's Web" and decided that that was told in third-person, as if someone was looking down on a story and telling what was happening without being "in" the story.

Discussion Points:

1.  What type of story is the one you are reading for your independent book, is it first or third- person?  Give me an example why, quoting from the book.  ( remember to use quotations if you are using exact words)

2.  Why do you think an author chooses first person or third person over the other type.  Is there one type you prefer to read, or think you have read more of?

3.  Have you ever read a second-person story?  If so, let us know what it was and if you enjoyed it.
How was it different?

Happy Reading!

My book the Lord of the Rings is told from third-person, the narrator is explaining what is going on. Frodo woke up to find a hole in his back from the tree, and a kink in his neck.

The author chooses the "person" in what case it most fits. If there is multiple characters, that is a good third-person time.

Unfortunatley, I don't know what second person is.

Hi Mrs. Simonds,

I am reading Summer Ball by Mike Lupica. I just started it this morning I think it's cool. I would say that book would be third person. I know that because it never says I. I think Mike Lupica chose this person because there is a lot of characters. I prefer to read first person books but I am not saying I don't like third person books. I don't think I have ever read a second person book ever.

Hi Mrs. Simonds,
The book that I am reading is a first person. There is five different parts I the book and each part is told by a different character and their side of the story.

I think that the author normally tells it from the first or second point of view because they like it better if someone is telling the story or from if you were looking down because they want it to be more like a movie.

I normally read books told by the first person. I never read a third person book.

Emma

Dear Mrs.Simonds,
1. My book is told by first person. Like when she says "Artie looked at me like I was the teachers pet".

2. Probably because they thought that it would be exciting and fun. I prefer 3rd person. I prefer 3rd person because then you could see what other people are doing and thinking.

3. I forgot what second person is.

Dear Mrs. Simonds,

1. I am just finished reading Small Steps. Small Steps is a 3rd person story. It is a 3rd person book because in the book it said "are you mad", said Ginny "no", said Armpit.

2. I think this book was a 3rd person story because it has a lot of characters in it and it would be kinda confusing to read a 1st person story with a lot of characters.

3. I have never read a second person book before that I know of. I bet I would enjoy reading one though

Ola Mrs.S!

In my book claws, Emma is the first person like when she says "I was looking for one of my school books but couldn't find it". I think I prefer 1st persons point of view because it is that person and it is more interesting to me. I do not think that I have read the 2nd persons second point of view. I read so many books that I probably do not know

Cheers!

Hi mrs Simonds
1)My book "A Whole Lot of Lucky" is written in first person. An example of my book being first person is when the main character said "I didn't Do it I am innocent."
2) I think when a author chooses to write a book in first person they really want to be that character. Or they write a book about themselves. I don't really care if my book is first or third person as long as it is a good book. For some reason most of the books I read end up being first person.
3) I don't remember reading a second person book.

Dear Mrs. Simonds,
My book is told in the first person, it is told from the point of view from Bobby. "That smiley face of hers'll fall off like a mask that popped its elastic, and underneath is a dragon lady. And that Ms. Wyman, I swear, wouldn't blink at removing your liver with her bare hands and eating it with a spoon."
I think the author James Howe, I think, writes the book from Bobby's point of view because instead of third person because it tells you what the main character is feeling and when. I really do not prefer either one I like them both equally!!! I don't really think that I have read more of one any more than the other.
I have never read a book that was told in the second person.

Dear Mrs.Simonds,
My book is a first person. I think it is a first person because the author tells the story about herself. I have never read a second person book. One of the things the main character says is "I want to see if Honeybun will be ready. Honeybun is a dog in my book and they want to know if she will be ready for agility trails. I don't like the first person more than the third person. I like them both!

Hi Mrs.Simonds,
It is first person because in the book it says "I realized I miss Adem" and that is first person.
I think that a author would use fisrt or third person for their story because you here that more often than second person and it might not make that much sence to some people. Also more people would dislike it becasue it is more comman to use first or third person. I like both types but I read more of first person.
I haven't read a second person story I didn't know what it was until you told us.

To Mrs. Simonds,

1. My book is a 3rd person book. In my book it says "he was sitting in his chair now, his hands clasped tightly together in front of him."

2. The author chose 3rd person because it sounds better with it. I think it would sound bad with 2nd or 1st. I think I usually read 3rd person books I do not know why but the books that I end up reading are all ways 3rd person.

3. I do not think I have ever read a 2nd person book. I think I would enjoy one though.

Hi Mrs.S
The independent book that I am is told in third person. An example is " My bro, get your skinny butt over here." said Willie Vazquez.
I think an author writes a story in first and third person because it is easier to understand. I prefer to read third person so I know who is really talking instead of just guessing.
I have never read a book told in second person.

Hi Mrs.S
I just remembered I have read a book told in second person. The book was kind of like this, if you want to become a writer turn to page 72 but if you want to be a teacher turn to page 24. This type of book makes you a character in the book choosing your path. I like this type of book because it puts you in the book so you pay more attention to what you are reading.

To Will Mas,

I also like first person books, I think it makes it less confusing. I do like third person books, but not a ton if there are more than 4 characters.

I have never read a second person book either. I don't think many have, or we don't exactly know what second person is. Good observation about your book not saying I.

Bonjour Mara,
I like how you gave an example of your book to show that it is told by the first person. I also like first person the best because I understand it better. I have not read any books by the second person. So far in Claws what do you rate the book? I probably rate my book a 91/2 because a few parts are a little boring.

Hi Wil Masterson I just got done reading your post about you never read a second person book. I didn't think that I have read a second person book either until my mom was saying how she read a second person book. My mom said the book was a choose your on adventer. That's when I realized that I had read a second person book. The book was kind of like if you want to be a banker than turn to page 30, but if you want to be a teacher turn to page 60.

I think that the titants curse is a third person because there are a lot of charchters.an example is "where going to have to jump" said percy "no will die" said anibeth.I think Rick Rordan choose third person because it would kinda soud like a bio in my book.I think i would chose that third person because it has more contackt with other people.

Hi Mrs S,
In Harry Potter I think it is told from a "first person" of Harry. "Harry nodded silently. He didn't have a clue what was going on, but he didn't seem to be being expelled, and some of the feeling started coming back to his legs." I think the author chose this because she could have more than one person talking.
I have never read a second person story but I bet they are interesting.

Cassie,
I agree when you said that the author really wants to be that character. That's a good way to describe the author's goal. You also said that you don't care if the book is told from the fist or third person as long as it is a good book, I agree!!! At first I said that the books that I read are about 50-50 third and first person, but now I think that I have read more first person books as well. HAPPY READING!!!

Dear Brianna,
(Mrs.Simonds:I am sorry this is so late)Anyways, that is really gross. I think third person is more interesting than first( unlike YOU) but sometimes it helps explain the story better. do not feel bad i have not read second person either.

Hi mara
I agree with you I think your book is a first person book. Backed on the example you gave me. I also prefer reading first person books like you said. You actually learn more about the main character. I also don't remember reading a second person book.

Mrs. Simonds,
1. I am reading Prinsess In Love. The book is FIRST PERSON. A teenager girl (the main character) is telling the story.
2. Maby because, it would be more exciteing and fun.
3. No I havent read a second person.

grace :) :) :) :)

Mara,
I agree with you that I have never read a second person book. I like first person because, that person can tell how they feel. Like my book. I also like third person books. I think second person books say you did this and you did that. I am not sure.
That was really good Mara!

To Wil Masterson and Mrs. Simonds,

I agree with Wil on number 1 because I also think when a book says I it is a third person. I think I will read a Mike Lupica book next. I will read it next because a lot of his books are about sports. On number 2 I agree with Wil when he says his book has a lot of characters I could figure it out by thinking most books with a lot of characters are usually 3rd person books. I have never read a second person book too. "Bye bye Wil"

biz,
I just wanted to tell you that a second person is when the story is told from a you. Like the choose your own ending books. Example: you go to a house and you open the door.
I also wanted to say it is the total opposite with me I don't really like third person books. I can't stand it when people talk in third person if I was talking third person right now i would be saying.

Hi will MacDonald,
I just finnished reading your blog and I thought you should know what a second person book is like. A second person book is like this. You're walking down a dark alley and there is a door if you want to go in turn to page 74, and if you decide to run turn to page 117. If you choose to run there is a large man chaseing you. If you want to try to run to the police station three blocks down turn to page 32, but if you want to run strait into the water one block down turn to page 15.
RRRRRRiiiiiilllllleeeeeeyyyyyy
