Capricorn

Capricorn Anderson is turning out to be an interesting character in our class read aloud "Schooled".  Today in writing class we made t-charts and focused on developing our own main characters before we start writing our fiction stories.  We discussed internal and external characteristics.

Discussion Points:
1. I know we have only read a few chapters, but, based on what we have read, what are some internal and external characteristics that we could say describe Capricorn?

2. Does Capricorn remind you of any other characters from other books you have read?  How so? Are there ways that he is different?

Hi Mrs. Simonds,
For external I would describe him a little dum, and does not really know anything of the world around him. For internal I would say nice, does not have that much friends besides Rain, does not like to get involved in things at school, and he wants a friend.

Capricorn reminds me of Emily from The Tale of Emily Windsnap because they are both different from other people. Ways that Capricorn is different from other people is that he does not live in town, does not have a professional doctor around, and he has different shoes than other people. I felt bad when Capricorn walk into school because everyone was staring at him because he looked different.

Hi Mrs Simonds
1)External:
*he had long blond hair
*he had shoes made out of corn husks
*in 8th grade
Internal:
*not normal
*smart
*knew how to drive even though he is not old
enough
2) Cap kind of reminds me of manic because they are both very different, from everyone. A way they are different from each other is, cap has a home. Cap has family. Maniac is trying to get a home. Maniac is also trying to get family.

Hi Mrs.S
I think some external characteristics that describe Cap are he doesn't dress like anyone else, and he doesn't speak like them. Some internal characteristics are that he does not understand why the kids his age are obsessed over text, he doesn't understand the object of periods and how the bell rings and everybody rushes to their next class.
Cap kind of reminds me of Maniac and how he has to adapt to a knew place in order to fit in with all the other kids. Cap is much different than Maniac because he is from a totally different life style. From being home schooled to being at a public school. Maniac went from being with his Aunt and Uncle to being an orphan without a home.

Cap is nice, Cap also doesn't understand school, which means he has to be a good person if the getting in-trouble is just him getting flummoxed. Cap on the outside looks sort of as he lives in a hot area, he wears sandals and a tattered robe.

Cap is like Bilbo Baggins, he gets thrown into a situation he doesn't want to be in, just like when Bilbo got forced to go on the journey. Cap is not like Bilbo because he goes with getting flustered, Bilbo would just kill the golbins, not get flustered.

The internal characteristics that describe Capricorn are that he is nice and a very caring person. He does not have a lot of friends except for Rain. Now that Rain is in the hospital, Capricorn has a chance to make friends at his new school.

For external qualities for Capricorn, I think that I would describe him as not very well dressed with long hair down to his back. He also seems unaware of his surroundings. Capricorn reminds me of a girl named Emma in the book Claws because she does not really pay attention to her surroundings like Capricorn. Capricorn is different in a lot of ways probably because he has never gone to school because he has been home schooled.

Aloha Mrs.Simonds,
INTERMAL:
*Nice
*doesn't really have a clue
*Thinks violence is never the answer
* Funny even when he isn't trying to be funny:)
EXTEMAL:
*hippe
*long hair(blond)
*lots of tie/die on his cloths
*his face may also look very lost in the book, because he has never been to a real school and is confused.
*cornhusk sandales
Well most of the books I read are not about hippies so no I have not. But I have read schooled many times before. Here are some ways he is different Hippie , homeschooled, wears lots of tie/die, and his cloths look homemade.

Hi Mrs.S

Some external things are she is poor, dirty, she is maybe 13 and she is not so smart. Some internal things are she is nice, she is a hippie. I think it is funny that she does not know how to use a locker at school. She was home schooled, by Rain.

Hi Mrs. Simonds,
External:
long hair, corn husk shoes, 8th grade. He is also way different than any body else.

Internal:
He does not really know what everyday thing are,(locker, cream and more) but he is pretty smart in school. THE SECOND LIFE OF ABIGAIL WALKER is about a girl that does not fit in like Cap, and finally finds a friend, and also fits in.

This book is really good. It makes me keep wanting to read more!!!

To Mrs Simonds
1. I think for external facts about Cap would be that his hair is all messed up, he has flip flops that are homemade and his clothing is very ragged. Some internal facts about Cap is that he has a grandmother named Rain, he has no parents,he is very shy and he does not know a lot about school.
2. Cap reminds me of a character named Maniac Magee. Cap reminds me of Manic because they are both kids with no parents. they also dress raggedly. they also both get bulled. They are different because Cap goes to school, Maniac does not. Maniac runs away from home, Cap does not.

Dear Mrs.Simonds,
I think Cap. is sort of a hippie and blind to the outside world. I also think Cap. wears kind of makeshift clothes. In the Charlie Bone series, Billy Raven was kind of like Cap. because he has no friends either.

Hello Cassie,

I agree with you for what you wrote for external and that he had long blond hair, he had shoes made out of corn husks, and he is in 8th grade.

I also agree with you for internal that he is not normal, he knew how to drive even though he is not old enough. I have to say I don't really agree with you that he is smart but he is not that smart at his school he does not know what Starbucks is and what lockers are and other things are.

I also agree with you that he reminds me of Maniac because they are both different for everyone. Ways that they are different that Cap has a home but Maniac did not have a really home.

To Wil Mast,

I agree with you, I guess he sort of is a hippy. He also is peacful like you said.

Wil, do you know Cap is is a boy, or did you just accidently type girl? Funny how some kids think he's a girl (no offense, it just seems like it since Cap has long hair)

Good blog, I agree with how you think Cap is.

Hi Mrs.Simonds,
1. Some external things are, that he has blond hair and his blond hair is long like girls hair. And he's of course a hippie.
Some internal things are, that he dosn't know things we do. Like, lockers and why you don't share your stuff and NOT put stuff in your locker.
2. Cap dose not remind me of a character. But he reminds me of my Uncle. (He dose not get the point of lockers)! See you tomorrow!!

Hi Sophia
I agree with you on all the external characteristics. It gave me a really good mental picture of what Cap really looks likely the outside.

I also agree with you on all the internal characteristics you listed. I do think that he is a very nice kid because he is always concerned about other people.

You did a nice job talking about how they are different. How do you think they are the same?

To Mrs. Simonds and Riley,

For the 1st question. I like the External characteristics about Cap. You had good description of Cap. The Internal characteristic were good too. They had a good description of his inside self. For the 2nd question. I like the way you said Maniac and Cap are a like and different. I think this blog was very good Riley.

Hi,Mrs Simonds
I love the book so far it is so so so GOOD!!!!!! I think it was really nice of Naomi to warn capricorn about her Zach and I forgot what the other girls name. I personally would hate being capriorn because he is bullied at pretty much every second of the day I mean I know that Zach thinks that it is funny but i would just start being guilty for bullying the poor kid i mean he he is pretty much a hippie. I cant belive that naomi has a crush Zach if I were her I would stop day dreaming about Zach and see what he is doing I after all what did cap ever do to them.

Hi Mrs, Simonds

Wow I can't belive the art teacher that was so cool that they tie dyed the tee shirts and I just love that all the students were there tie dying away I think that is was really really rare that there was no spit ball in his hair.
I really really really loved when the teacher made the comment that capricorn saved the bus driver.

Hi,Mrs, Simonds
I was amazed that Capricorn used 150 dollars of the school dance money to buy Sophie that beautiful and engraved bracelet. I mean that was really really really thoughtful of Capricorn because it's not like somebody thinks about how sad a person if and then buy's them what they really want

Hi mrs Simonds
I was super surprised that Naomi just ran into the boys bathroom and KISSED HIM!!! I was so happy that Zach powers got mad at capricorn for being way way way more popular then him I think that it was sad when the other( forgot that kids name) kid stopped hanging out with him.
