3 Cups of Tea

Today we learned about how hard it was for Greg to raise the money for the school he promised to build in Korphe.  We learned how he then sold everything he had, including his car, books, etc. in order to fly back to Pakistan.
What does this tell us about Greg's character?

Greg finally arrived back in Pakistan, bought the materials he needed to build the school, loaded up the trucks and arrived finally in Skardu.

In Skardu, he goes to Changazi's house.  Changazi, Akhmalu, and Janjungpa all try to get Greg to build schools in their villages instead of in Korphe.  What is Greg's reaction?  Do you think his reaction is a fair one?
Why do you think that these three men tried to  get Greg to come to their villages, using dishonest ways,  instead of supporting his goal to get to Korphe?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts, not only to my questions, but also in response to your classmates responses.

Hi Mrs. Simonds, I think what Greg did showed that he is very kind, does not brake a promise and never gives up. Greg's reaction was mad, he was mad because Changazi,Akhmalu and Janjunpa kept nagging him and saying "why don't you just build a school here" or something. I think his reaction was fair because they also were being dishonest with him and that's mean. I think maybe the three men didn't like something in Korphe or maybe even someone..... Who knows well I can't wait to find out love' Monkey101 A.K.A Julia.H

HHHHHHIIIIIII!!!!

Greg made a goal and is determined to do it. He sticks to his word and does what he says he's going to do. I think his reaction is what should I do? Build a school for the children or build schools in the village? I think the village people saw him and the kids talking about building a school and they don't think it's fair to build one school for someone.

Hi it's Ben!!!ˆ_ˆ I think Greg is a really determined person. I say that because of when he sold most of his things just so that he could go to the people in Korphe. I don't know why the three men acted so greedily. Maybe because they thought this would be the only chance to get help from someone. Or because they thought Greg would provide them with other stuff too. I would probably have acted the same way if three people tried to persuade me to give them something that was originally supposed to go to neither of them.

Hey!
Well I think Greg's reaction was kind of fair. I mean you would feel sad if they tried to get you do something that you promised someone else you would do. I think the men did what they did because the wanted to make their community a better place. I mean you would want
you're community to be better but you should understand when someone says they promised they would do something for someone else. I bet Greg got annoyed after a while.

When we learned that Greg sold all of his belongings so he could get a plane ticket to go to Pakistan. It showed me that Greg really cared and wanted to make the school. It tells me that Greg can keep his promises and make them happen. When Greg finally got there three men said that Greg promised to come to Korphe and build a school. Greg's reaction was angry and frusterated. I don't think it was fair when Greg was angry and frustrated because why build a school at the other town instead of Korphe, why not build a school between them. So all the children could learn in a school. I think the three men tried to get Greg to build a school there because if they told the truth that Greg wouldn't believe them. So thats why they weren't honest.

Hi it's Tom. Greg gave away everything for the kids of Korphe. He pretty much gave away his life. I especially can't believe he gave away his car. This all came from losing his trail on K2. He is is making a school for them because he saw them outside in the cold working without a teacher.

Hello Room 2308!
I think that Greg is a person that doesn't care that much about his self.[Well, I mean he does care about himself but he mostly cares about taking care about other people.] I think that Greg isn't self-conscious at all. He doesn't care what other people think of him at all. He mostly cares about helping other people including children. He is also very caring because he helps a lot of people.
I think that Greg's reaction to Changazi, Akhmalu, Janjungpa was definitely fair because they were all being really greedy and said that Greg was going to build a school for all of them. Then they all broke out into an argument. I think that they were all taking advantage of Greg Mortenson. When I say that I mean, that they gave him delicious food, a shelter to sleep in, and also used the kids to take advantage of him. What I mean, is that I think that they told he kids to do that to Greg. I think that they didn't really let Greg go to Korfe because maybe the people of Korfe are mean or those separate villages had a big fight, disagreement, little war or it could really be anything at all. I think that it was mean how the three men wouldn't let Greg go to Korfe and help the children. Compared to Greg's behavior in the beginning of the story to me this was a big change in his behavior. He has had a lot of pretty bad things going on between his sister Crista dying and not reaching the summit of K-2 like he has always dreamed of and some other things that we probably haven't heard about. So, to me that was a really big change in his behavior. I also think that it was very brave of him to sell all of his things to get the tools that he needed.

Hey Mrs.S
I just love this book. Greg's character shows me that he will do anything to keep his promise even if it includes giving up part of his life. Greg was not sure when all the men where fighting over where Greg was going to build the school he really didn't know what to do. I think it was fair when Greg finally said no to the other men because he already said yes to Korphe.I think the three men tried to get Greg to build the school where they lived because they wanted the best for their village. See you in school tomorrow bye.

Hi Mrs.Simonds, Jayme I disagree I think Greg's reaction was very fair because the people in Korphe were very nice to Greg and the people in Skardu were demanding. Plus they were dishonest who would want to build a school for someone who lied to them. Also I think the three men didn't have to lie they could just tell the truth. I don't understand what the three men are trying to do I mean did they think lying was the answer? If I were Greg I would be very mad they are acting like it's a joke Greg has worked so hard and now they expect him to do more! from, Monkey101 A.K.A Julia.H

dear everyone,
I think that Greg is kind, sweet, helpful, determined and thinks more about other people more than he does himself.
what really surprised me was when Greg gave up his hole life just to give the kids in Korphe a school.
The reaction Greg had when he heard about the selfishness was mad.I would be mad to if I were to go and sell almost all my stuff and then have someone try to tell me what to do with it.I think that it makes no since to build A school all the way in Krophe when you already are in Skardu where you could build the school in the middle.I think that the three men were trying to get Greg to build the school there because they don't have a school in Scardu so they thought it was unfair for them to have a school and not them.

WOW. What a tough place to end at, when greg finds out he now needs to builds a bridge. I understand why He'd feel frustrated about that. And how is he gonna get all that money, since he basically used all his up on the school. I bet now He'll be sure to check every thing so he doesn't make the same mistake again. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Greg is angry with changazi. I think it is fear that Greg was angry with him. I think they tried to get him to come to there village because they where gel-es that korphe got the school and not them. I hope Greg gets to build the school. cant wait to read more.

Dear Room 2308,

I think that when Greg sold pretty much all of his stuff to raise the money for the school it told us that he really wanted to build the school! I think that it also shows us that when he makes a promise he will do anything to keep it! I think that it was not very nice that the other village tricked him into coming over to theirs so that he would build the school there. When the men from the other village tricked Greg, I think that Greg was very mad at them! I think that the reason that the other village tricked him using dishonest ways was because they really wanted him to build the school there, but they knew that he had promised the other village.

Hello room 2308ers!!:)
This tells us that Greg is a very dependable because he did whatever he had to do to keep his promise. Greg is a very caring person who doesn't care about himself(well he cares about but is happier when other people are happy.) I think it is very rude that instead of being happy that some children are getting a school but instead they were arging over it. Greg doesn't deserve to be yelled at for doing something nice. Even if it wasn't going to be in the most convient place for their kids it's better than having no school at all. But now he can't build a school at all because he doesn't have enough money.

Hi Mrs Simonds,
I think Greg is very nice because he gave away almost everything he owned. If it were me and someone wanted me to build a school or a bridge I would think really hard. Then I would say well a bridge could help me get the supplies to Korphe but if I run out of money I can't keep my promise. If I was in this situation I would go back to the United States and get more money then build a bridge and then a school. I wonder what Greg will do?

Hi Mrs. Simonds,
I think Greg is a very nice person because he gave almost everything he owned away. It said that he only had $85 left in the bank. If I were him and was in this situation I would think, well a bridge would make it easier to bring the supplies to Korphe but if I ran out of money I would be breaking a promise. I would go back to the United States and get more money, build a bridge and then build a school. I wonder what Greg will do?

I really like Three Cups of Tea. At the begining it was sort of confusing but know I understand it better. If I lived in Korphe and a weird person came I would hide. Anyway I can't wait to find out what happens. I wonder what will happen? Will Greg.......................!

Hi it's Tom. Greg's reaction was definitely mad. Because Changazi, Akhmalu, and Janjungpa were arguing about who got the school. I can't believe that they were fighting about the school. Because he said that he was making the school for the kids of Korphe. I don't get why they were fighting because they already knew the school was going to Korphe.

Hello room 2308!!!!!!
Hey Sam I agree with you on how when Greg makes a promise he sticks to his word and does what he says he'll do.
I think that Greg is very brave because he sold all his things in order for the kids of Korfe. Julia, I agree with you how his reaction was mad and how it was fair. I also think how it was something in Korfe that the 3 men didn't agree on with Korfe.
I also think how it wasn't that necessary that those three men and the other elders got in a fight over a REALLY silly thing.
When we found out that Haji Ali and the Elders of the village wanted to build a bridge I was kind of surprised. I mean, who would be that greedy and sort of take advantage of some one like that?
I still can't believe that all of this started with the wrong turn on a mountain trail. Climbing on of the most harsher mountains ever.
I still am a little confused on why the three men,Changazi, Akhmalu, and Janjunpa were trying to take advantage of Greg.
Hey Tom, I agree with you on how you said that Greg practically gave away his life because he sold like everything that he owned.
I would definitely say that Greg Mortenson has a very loving soul. A very good soul will definitely help you make good decisions later in life. I think that his caring, generous, and kind soul is what helped him agree to helping the people of Korfe. Greg Mortenson is an amazing person that deserves to live life well and a very long life.

I love this book! I think it's really cool that this is a true story. I think it will inspire a lot of people to make a difference. I wonder what Greg is doing now in his life. I know he is still doing the pennies for peace with the help of his daughter. I think if we don't read the 2nd book I'll read it on my own. I wonder what the second book is about.

It tells us that he cares about building a school.I think his reaction was fine I mean I would get really upset to because you would not want to let anyone down but you are saveing up money for some where else. So I do think it is fair. Beacuse they are only thinking about them selfs and their villige. Maybe the three men don't like somethig about Korphe.

I agre with you sam when greg makes a gaol to do it he does do it I like that about him alout about him. Also about how kind he is to build a school

Hi it is Zoe
I agree with Sam 100% because he does stick to what he says. I also agree with Ellie because I think his reaction was fair to. I would never sell a car just to buy a plane ticket. I think it was really mean what those three men did I mean even I would not do that. I think it was really nice of Greg to bulid a school.

Hi mrs.Simonds, Georgia I disagree with you I think the three men lied to Greg cause they didn't like something in Korphe. They are pretty much taking advantage of Greg and trying to use him like a toy. The men think that since Greg live in the U.S that he can just build a school easily. Greg is building a school for Korphe cause they were nice to him and he was heartbroken when he saw the kids trying to do school work on the ground in the cold. So why would he want to build a school for Skardu I mean they almost like demanding him to, now that's just mean. Love monkey101 a.k.a Julia.H

Hi Mrs.Simonds!:)
Greg wanted to achieve his goal. He said he would build the school in Korphe so he wants to. He probably got annoyed cause they wanted him to build it in there town in Skardu. They probably wanted a school in their village so the children could get a good education. I wonder how it will go building a bridge and school.

Hi Mrs.Simonds!:)
It took a lot of money to get to Paistan, build the bridge, and school. I wonder what Greg felt like to part of a different persons family. I forget his name. Everyone in Korphe must be excited for the school. Now they won't have to sit on the ground.

Greg selling everything tells us he is really caring and keeps all his promises.
Greg's reaction to building in the villages was ,"wow, these people are really selfish and they only want a school for themselves." It was a fair reaction because they were being selfish and it is not a good thing to be selfish.
The 3 men didn't want the other people to have a school when they felt they needed one there so the kids would not have to sit on the ground and write their work out.

Hey Julia .H.
I said the same thing as you in my blog about what kind of a person Greg is and I strongly agree with you Because Greg ia a amazing man. The three men were just being plain old mean I like what you said about that. You are also probably right, the three men probably don't like something or somebody in Kophe. Wow I really like this book and sometimes I don't like books like these ones. see you in school tomorrow bye.

hi!

I agree with Jayme, they should build a school right in the middle of the 2 towns. Know if I think of it I think Greg will because he's smart. At the same time I think that he will only build in Korfe because they ask him first and they really need it and he promised. He spent all his money JUST to go to Korfe and build a school. I kind of think that he should build it right in the middle.
