Hello Students!
We hope you are enjoying "Crash" by Jerry Spinelli! This is the second book we have read as a class by the same author. The first was "Maniac Magee". The two main characters are very interesting indeed. Today we would like you to compare the main characters from each book. To compare means to tell what things are similar, and what things are different.
Discussion Points:
1. Compare Manaic Magee and Crash Coogan. Explain at least three ways that they are similar, and three ways that they are different. We would like you to push your thinking. That means, the fact that they are both boys is a very superficial similarity. Look for more in depth ways that they are the same.......character traits or personality traits for example.
2. Compare the main character from the book you are reading to both Maniac and Crash.

1. They are the same because they both are very athletic they love to run. So far they are not really that popular but they still have friends. They both have a address evan though Manaic only had one for part of his life he still had a address, They are different because Crash has a family in the book and Manaic does not have one. Crash is a trouble maker and Manaic is not, he is really kind. Crash likes to get rough and Manaic does not like playing rough at all.
2. In my book that I am reading the main character is a Gorilla. After I thought really had I noticed that they all love to run.

Josh's compareson of maniac and crash are 1.They both get in fights a lot, 2.They both have a girl close to them and there age,3.They are both some what solo. and now for Josh's differences between Maniac and Crash. 1.Maniac gets bullyed, and Crash bullys. 2.They might be in different time because they haven't said anything about the skin colors being seporated. 3.They have different kinds of friends which means they like different kinds of people. 4. Crash is more into girls and stuff when Maniac doesn't even know why people fall in love.
Well septimus is VERY adventureous and so is Maniac and they both have friends that are girls. Septimus does have one arch enimey like Crash but Septimus' is his brother, not the boy next door.

Both Manaic and Crash are tough. Both of them like to play pranks. They both are fast runners and do well in sports.
Crash and Maniac are different because Maniac is an orphan and Crash has a family. Maniac's town is seperated by skin color while Crash's isn't. Also Manaic's pranks were more silly while Crash's are sometimes mean.
In my book the One and Only Ivan, Ivan loves to watch tv and so do Maniac and Crash.

1 Maniac Magee is a fast runner with no REAL parents. Crash, is a footfall player and a REAL family. Maniac lived all places like his grandparents (I think). Crash only lives in his house.
2 Mrs,Starch is a tall, pastel colored cloths lady who scares people. Crash and MManiac are BOYS, and not girls. They dontscare people and they love sports, not teaching.

Crash and Maniac are the same because they both are good at sports. They are especially good at football. Their friends are mostly football players. Also they are both very active. For example Maniac is always running and Crash is always playing football.
Another reason they are alike is that they are more competitive against one certain person.
They are different because Crash loves pizza and Maniac is allergic to it. Another way they are different is that Crash is aggressive and Maniac isn’t. The last reason they are different is that Maniac has no parents and Crash does.
There are a lot of main characters in my book but I chose Bridget. Crash and Bridget are the same because they both like sports. Also both their parents are always tired. Maniac and Bridget are both good at running and sports.
Some differences are that Bridget is not popular and Crash is. Another one is that Maniac doesn't have parents and Bridget does. Also Bridget has fancy sports equipment and Maniac doesn't.

My three reasons would be that Maniac and Crash are both very athletic kids. another reason is that they always are getting in fight both inside and outside. Finally, they both have crushes about girls.
I think in between the two books the main characters were totally opposite. My book is about NERDS that save the world and well the other books are just about kids going on adventure or a just about plain old life. The one thing that is alike is that in my book the NERDS get bulled and in Maniac Magee, Maniac gets bulled. But they are not really alike.

I agree with you that they are both very tough. I also agree with you that they like to play pranks. I agree with you that they both are good at running and good at sports. I wrote that one my blog entry.
I agree with you that Crash has a family but don't forget that Maniac had a family then they died and they he lived a a house but it was not his actual family. I agree with you on your next sentence but Maniac Magee was a book published back then and Crash is sort of a new book. I also agree that Maniac has silly pranks and that Crash has mean pranks.
I am also reading The One And Only Ivan and I agree with you that Maniac, Ivan and Crash all love T.V.

I agree with you that Crash and Maniac both love to run and play sports. Maniac just goes into a game and scores a touchdown. Crash is in the game and gets touchdowns all the time. I also agree with you that Crash is a troblemaker/ bully and Maniac is not a troublemaker/ bully he is a very kind person. I am reading the same book as you Emma and the gorilla is a silver back and his name is Ivan. I also noticed that they all love to run too.

i think that crash and maniac are alike because crash loves playing football and maniac loves running so they are both sporty. crash and maniac are also different because crash has a home and maniac doesn't and crash also has parent maniac doesn't

Magee is very oblivous to the World around him, while Crash is all into pizza and football. Crash is not a very nice person, he was rude to Web and his family. Magee wouldn't care. They're simmiliar because they are athletes.
Sam is very adventurous and protective. Magee is adventurous and protective of Amanda's Encyclopedia A. Crash doesn't care about that, he cares about himself.

Three ways Maniac Magee and Crash Coogan are different are-
Crash is always so straight forward and loves to make a big deal about everything, and Maniac is always keeping to himself.
Crash goes to school, lives in a town, goes to school has friends, and plays sports. Maniac never exactly "settle down".
Maniac is so nice and shy and Crash is like a bully he's always teasing others because their different.
Three ways they're the same are-
They both develop into these different people as the story caries on.
they both enjoy to be active (Maniac loves to run, Crash loves to play football).
They both have families. Well, Maniac doesn't have a a family related to him but he has a group of friends he's close to.
The main character in my book's name is Leo. He's an actor. To him life is a play and your always doing improv. Although Leo's brother is obsessed with football, so is Crash. The character in my book is very different from Crash and Maniac. I mean they are booth bays but other wise they just are three totally different people!!!

True story bro. The characters appear to have been gene spliced into different areas and are very simmilar. Yet they would not like eachother because of Crash "being cool," and Maniac, "being not so swag." This is why these characters are fascinating, you appear to notice Magee is oblivous. Thank you for something to comment to Josh!

1. Three ways that Crash and Maniac both the same because they are both like to run. Another way they can be the same is that they are both good athletes, Maniac is good at running and Crash is good at football. Lastly they both don't get intimated by what other people say.
Three ways there are different because Maniac has no home and is an orphan, and Crash has a home and a family. Secondly Crash fights back and Maniac doesn't. Lastly Maniac doesn't want to hurt anyone in any way and Crash doesn't mind getting rough.
2. The main character in my book is a girl named Sasha Silver. She can be like Crash and Maniac because she is really athletic.

Crash is very rough and aggressive. On the other hand,
Maniac is gentle and kind. Another different thing is that Crash is pretty popular, and Maniac is pretty much on his own. Crash has a family and an address, Maniac does not.
In my book there is a kind lady who loves and has a million animals. This sort of reminds me of when Maniac had to sleep with buffalos!
