New Books for Social Studies Unit on American Indians

Hello Munchkins!

Many of you have chosen your book to read for our study of American Indians in social studies.  Share with us a bit about your book.  It may be what tribe or tribes the book is about, what area of the country, a bit about the plot, main character etc.  Maybe you will share some questions you have already, or what you are looking forward to.  You could also share why you chose that particular book.
If you have not chosen your book, check out what your classmates have chosen and write about your reaction to their description.  Maybe you will get an idea for what you would like to read!
I look forward to hearing about your books......
Happy Reading and Blogging,
Mrs. S

it's Benˆ_ˆ The book I'm reading is called White Fang II. The native american tribe in this is the Haida. They are actually from Alaska ( I didn't have any other books for native americans). It's about a man (21) named Henry Casey who has a "pet" wolf, White Fang... That's sort of the only thing I know, but I'll catch you up when I know more. I'm wondering when the Haida tribe will meet Henry and White Fang.

Hello room2308ers!!:)
I'm only about 20 pages into my book. I wrote down some key things that so far I think they do,have or any traditions. So far what I've figured out is that they tell stories, stories that they tell are passed down from a long time ago. They also trade and make canoes. A lot of the things so far that I've mentioned a lot of the Native Americans did or made. The Indians in my book are also religious.

Hello room 2308!
I have not gotten my book yet but I have chosen it. In 1758 a group of warriors invaded Mary's home and captured her family. Mary was separated away from her parents, brothers, and sister. She traveled with the Indians and ended up in a Seneca village. Her new life wasn't easy and she missed her family really badly. She was so scared and confused on the Seneca ways that she even tried to run away! I chose it because the title kind of sounded interesting. The title is "Indian Captive The Story of Mary Jemison." When I looked it up it kinda seemed interesting to me. I am not quite sure where it takes place but I can't wait to find out. I can't wait to read it because I know that the author is really good. His name is Lois Lenski. I am wondering if when she tries to get away if she does get away one of the times. I can't wait to get it and start reading! =-)

I have not chosen my book yet but I think I know what I want to read about. I think I want to read about the mohawks since I did my project on them. I hope the library has a book on them. If they do not I think I will read the last of the Mohicans because I think Tom said there was mohawks in that book. I hope I find one.

Dear Room 2308,

I picked the Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare. I picked it because in 3d grade my teacher Mr. J (A.K.A. Kelsey's dad!) read it to us and I forgot what happens! It is about a boy named Matt. He and and his father leave to go build a house in Maine. His dad goes back back home to get his sister(s) and mom and bring them to Maine, and Matt stays to guard the house! Matt thinks he sees other people and he's right. He sees Indians and becomes good friends with the chiefs grandson Attean!

Hi it's Tom. My book is called The Last Of The Mohicans. I chose this book because I knew that we were learning about the native Americans of New England. My Dad got me the book a while ago and I really haven't got to it until now. The story is based on the French and Indian War. The book was written by James Fenimore Cooper. His Dad was a judge who founded Cooperstown where the Baseball Hall Of Fame is.

Hi Mrs.Simonds, rigght now I am reading " Standing in the light" by Mary Pope Osborne. So far it's really good and I have got so much just from the first 30 pages. It takes place in Delaware, Pennsylvania and it's the year 1763 when the indians came to familes and started to terrorise them. The main character Catharine is very scared but her father is not scared he's actually pretty relaxed. Her dad says he's listening to god and he also said that they should unlock the doors to show the indians trust. But everyone else thinks that unlocking all the doors is crazy. In the back of my book it talks about what is going happen and it gave me a prediction of what's going to happen next. Love Monkey101 a.k.a Julia.H

Hey, happy Friday!
Well I haven't read a lot of my book but its good so far.
I picked Sign Of The Beaver. I picked it because I read it in third grade but I don't remember it and I know it was good. All I know is that a kid stays at home alone while his father goes to do something but really never comes back. I also remember that there's a big hairy character.
I'm not much of a historical fiction reader but to tell you the truth I have never really read historical fiction. I hope everyone finds a good book!

Dear Room 2308,

I am commenting on Kelsey's blog. I think it is a really good idea that she wrote down some key things that she had read so far on paper, I think that the I might try doing that on my next book! I was also wondering what the name of the tribe is! I agree with her that the stuff she said that the Native Americans do in the story is what a lot of other ones do! Something else I want to know is it a fiction or nonfiction?

Hello room 2308! =-)
Hey Ben, I kinda started to read White Fang once and it seemed really interesting. Doesn't seem kinda strange that this man has a pet wolf? I would be freaked out to have a pet wolf.
Neill, you know how you wrote that the book you might chose had to do with your Native American tribe? Well, I think that learning more about your tribe for this project is really cool.
Georgia, how come in your book Catherine's littlest brother and her sister keep on getting sick a lot? That's a question I would ask myself if I read that book.
See you guys in school on Monday.

Hi Hi

I am reading The Journal Of Jesse Smoke [the trail of tears]. It is written by Joseph Bruchac. The story takes place in Georgia. Jesse Smoke is part of the Cherokee Indians. White men drove him and his family out of there home and into the west. I can't wait to read more. Now I know why it's called the trail of tears because him and his family had to go through a lot of hard times.

Dear Room 2308,

Right now I am reading Percy Jackson and the Olympian's, The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan.
To make any sense right now I have to tell you what the whole series is about. Percy is a half blood which means one of his parents is a mortal and one is a god. He goes to Camp Halfblood. A long time ago the gods and the Titans fought. The Titans lost and are now planning to take over the gods and rule the world. The book I'm reading is about the Titan's evil leader, Kronos, who was chopped up into millions of pieces and is now totally reformed and is planing to take over the world. Percy and his friends have to fight him to save the world.

Hi room 2308ers!!!:)
As I said before I'm reading The Winter People. Since I didn't start it yet I don't know these questions. On the cover, it has a indian man running in the water with a canoe besides him. The guy has a serious face on. I'm not quite sure what the message is. Maybe the guy is running away from something. I don't know. I wonder who the winter people are.

Hey Mrs.Simonds!!!:)
I finished a new book this morning. Walls Within Walls by Maureen Sherry. It's an excellent, awesome, book!!! I loved it! It's about these kids who move to a really big, fancy apartment because their dad gets rich. They live in the famous billion air Mr.Lyon Post apartment. Well part. Cj is the oldest, then Brid, then Patrick, and then Carron whos a baby. Cjs twelve, Brid eleven, and Patrick five or something if I'm remebering right. Mr. Post's daughter Eloise helps Cj, Brid, and Patrick slove all seven poems. I better stop or I might spoiel the book.

Hi it's Tom. My book is set in New York State near the Hudson River. I haven't read that much yet. These are the characters that I've met so far. General Webb, Cora and Alice Munro, and Duncan Heyward. Cora and Alice Munro's father is a Colonel and Duncan Heyward is a British Major. Duncan Heyward is responsible for bringing the Munro girls to Fort William Henry and protecting them from Indians.

Hello room 2308ers!!:)
Julia h. your book sounds sad but really good! What's your prediction? Why did they choose there family to terrorise? I would be really scared if I was her. I also think it's crazy to leave the doors unlocked! Has anyone else noticed that the Indians do the same type of thing as Native Americans?

Hi it's Tom. These are some facts about the Mohican tribe. Mohican hunters and warriors used bows and arrows, spears, and axes. Fishermen used spears and nets. They ate mostly fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish. Mohican women wore skirts with leggings. Mohican men wore breechcloths and leggings.

Hi the book I am reading is even better now. It has gotten a little more action in it but just a little. I love the tradichions this tribe has. For example one of them is to clean your face with snow and you will look better when you get older. In my opinoin that does not work. Oh ya the book I am reading is called The Girl Who Chased Away Sorrow.

I have posted on this book, Crossing Panther's Path, three times already but I will give you all an update on where I am in the book.
The 15-year old kid, Billy, is trying to get to his parents in a blizzard. The only way to get there is to pass through the Panther's Path. There is a bunch of stuff going on, like wars and stuff, on Panther's Path. He is trying to get through the path and everyone warns him not to go that way. He tries to find another route but so far he can not find one. He is now lost.
I will keep you updated on what happens next.
