Perspective

Hi Guys!
Today we talked a bit more about perspective. We talked about first person, in which the story is being told by one person's point of view, a person that is in the story. You tend to read a lot of "I did....." "We went"...etc.
Third person is when a story is told by a narrator that is not part of the story.
Some stories that we have read together told in first person are:
Schooled ( each chapter told by a different character's point of view, but all first person)
and
The Liberation of Gabriel King.
Some stories that we have read together told in third person are:
Where the Wild Things Are
and
Chrysanthemum.

Mr. Geranis talks about two different types of third person on his reading blog, Limited and Omniscient. Go on and read about the difference if you are interested.
Discussion Points:
a. What type of perspective does the author of the book you are currently reading use?
b. What type of perspective, First or Third, do you prefer?
c. Why?
d. What might be the advantages or disadvantages of using either First or Third person perspective?

In my bookI'm reading, it is told in first person perspective. And by the way, to anyone who is looking for a book, I highly recommend 11 Birthdyas. I enjoy first person perspective because it is what I'm used to. I don't think I have ever read a third person perspective book. Anyone know of one? If so tell me the name in school.

The type of perspective the author chose in my book is third person perspective. J.K. Rowling stays with the one character(Harry)but also sometimes shows other characters' feelings.
Personally, I like third person perspective better than first because in first person perspective you can only see, smell or feel like that one character. In third person perspective the author can jump around from person to person, and tell you how each character is feeling at any specific time. I don't think I've ever read a second person perspective book. Has anyone read a second person perspective book? If so, what book?

#1. The book I'm reading now is called Outcast of Redwall the author of it uses 3rd person perspective like, "Six Claw just wanted power and he would do any thing to get it."

#2+#3. I Like 3rd more then 1st because some of the books I really like have more then 1 character and you have to do 3rd perspective to do that.

#4. A advantage to 3rd might be... like I said before you can have more then one main character and you can find out what the other characters are thinking insted of just the main character.

Mrs.Simonds and class
a. Right now I am reading Ella Enchanted and this story is told in a first person perspective.

b. When I am writing I usually use a first perspective for personal narratives and third for fiction. In the books I read it doesn't really matter to me. I prefer both.

c. The reason why I prefer both first and third perspective is because sometimes it depends on the kind of book you are reading.

d. If you are reading/writing a personal narrative it makes it more exciting to read when it is a first person perspective because it makes it more real. A disadvantage of a first person is that you don't know what the other characters are feeling. *katherine*

(1) Well Sarah I dont know like what a second perspective book is Mrs.S could you look it up? I feel like we talked about it in class but I dont really remember what it is. Right now my book is a first person perspective she is telling how miserable she is any whoooo I just finished my book!!!!

(2) I disagree with Sarah because I think if you read a first person book you can really be that character feel what that character is feeling, you can really get into the book.

(3) The advantages of a first person perspective is as I said before you can really be the character and it will make your book feel more interesting.

a. The book I am reading is Calvin and Hobbes. I don't know what perspective it is because it isn't told by a narrator. But it is not told by one person's point of view either.

b. I really don't care what kind of perspective it is.

Wierdly yours,

My book that I am reading now uses 1st person perspective. They say lots of "I got" or "I had to".

I agree with Sarah that in 1st person perspective you only know what one person's feels or see's and in 3rd person you get all the characters feels.

I was also wondering what 2nd person perspective is and if anybody has ever read a book with 2nd person perspective? I might have, but we never talked about perspective's in 3rd and 4th grade!!

Allie,
Second person perspective would be would be referring to the main character as "you". It is commonly used in self-help books, choose your own adventure books, and maybe in role-playing books or lyrics in a song. It is hard to think of a book that is in second person perspective, but I bet you could think of a song that is written that way. Can you?
I also think we have one "choose your own adventure" book in class, we will have to check and see if it is written in second person.
Good post, keep writing!

Emma,
I agree that sometimes with 3rd person you do get a broader picture of the story. However, what about "Schooled"? That was written in first person, but each chapter was written from a different character's point of view. I feel like I got a really good handle on how each character thought. I would have, however, been interested to read a chapter from Rain's point of view. Why do you think the author did not write any chapters from her point if view/
Also, can you think of any other books that were written in first person, but went back and forth between different characters? Can anyone else think of any? good posting, keep it up!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. S

①. Im reading Soldier X. It is told in 1st Person view.

②+③ My favorite point of view if 1st person. In 3rd person it can get a little confusing whos talking. I just like it when the story gets told from one point of view.

I think Gabe is afraid of Terrance because, Terrance likes to scare people. He also likes to give people the fright. When we where readying the story Gabe was writing down what he was scared of. One of them where Freidas basement and Freida had to go down there to get something and wanted Gabe to go down with her so they want down and there was blood all over the wall and punching bags like 5 of them and he got scared and then Freidas brother came down slowly and scared the liveing day lights out of him i think it was funny!

My author Mike Lupica is third perspective.I prefer first perspective because you can tell what the charecter thinks or feels. But it doesn't really matter to me. I think that first perspective has a advantage because you know what the caracter is either thinking or feeling mentally.Third has a disadvantage because you can tell what the charecter is think.

I'm reading Hardy BOys Hunting for Hidden GOld and it is in the third person. I think first person is better than third person because you get to feel how it is happening in that character. Schooled I like because It has more then 1 person thats telling the story. I think that there are no advanteges in that perspective. henry

1. I am reading the BATTLE OF THE Labarinth (part of the Percy Jackson and the olympians seires).
I think the athuor is using 1st person perspective ( whitch I prefer because it gives you the inside scoop on the main charector and many other people in the story too, like in my book Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase are sort of like the what I just said about a minute ago.

a Long long long long long long long time ago I made a time warp palace and I started a big big big big big big big big big army and we attacked the dragons and I rular of the plata plata boom kingdom got shot by an arrow right in the toe and got all mad that I ate the largest cow in the land of plop plop plop plop country.
