Wow, I don't know about you, but I am totally hooked on this book. It has been awhile since I read it and I am remembering how well written it is as we read it in class. I love the protagonist, Jeffrey Magee. I love how the author gives you a good picture of what type of person he is, using Jeffrey's deeds and actions.
Even though we are at the beginning of the story, we have learned quite a bit about Jeffrey. We know he is a small kid, scraggly, sort of non-descript. We have also learned about what type of a person he is.
Discussion point:
1. Describe what type of person Jeffrey "Maniac" is. For example, Max, in "Where the Wild Things Are" is a daring, out-of-control, strong-willed and imaginative child. We know this because he gets in trouble, calls his mom names, and used his imagination to go to a new world. What is Jeffrey like? Tell me why you choose the words you do to describe him.

To me Maniac is a unusual kind of kid, I mean he ran 2 miles, from one town to another. Plus he always runs, EVERYWHERE, never, ever stops and walks. But he must be brave to do everything he does, like he saved the kid from Finsterwald's backyard, and showing up at the Pickwell family's dinner table, and at the baseball field hitting every pitch McNab threw at him, and even the FROG!!! I love this story!!

Maniac is a weird kid who is not shy. He is also brave when other kids in the story afraid of some one he is not at all. When other kids can't hit the baseball that McNab pitched he can. I can't wait to read the next chapter!

i think that Manic is a little loopy sometimes like he doesn't know what to do when he is not at home. Like in the begining when he was screaming I was confused why he was screaming and what me happened that made him act this way. But at the same time i feel like i would like to be friends with him because his is really cool how he just kind of floats on air when he runs. I also think Maniac is really brave beacause he stood up to mars and the kid that had never struch anyone out.

I am totally hooked on this book too! I think Maniac is a brave, gentle, and athletic. I think he is brave because he saved the kid from the high-schoolers at Finsterwald's. I think he is gentle because when Mars Bars started being mean to him instead of being mean back to him he kept his cool. I think he is athletic because he kicked the ball with 1 hand hit the ball from the "unstopable" Mcnab and all of the running. ~ Sydney
