Hi Guys!
Long time, no post :)
We are on chapter 5 of our new read aloud, "Anything But Typical" by Nora Raleigh Baskin. It is about a boy named Jason Blake, an autistic 12 year old. The story is told from his point of view, and he tries to tell it so that "neurotypicals", anyone who is not autistic, can understand. We have had some great discussions so far.
My question for you today is this:
In chapter 3 Jason tells us that his dad says that "There is no such thing as luck, good or bad. Life is what you make of it". Tell me if you agree with Jason's dad or if you disagree. Please explain yourself and give reasons for your answer.
Feel free to read your classmates responses as well and comment on what they have to say, as always, respectful like you are in our class discussions!

I agree with jason's dad because in real life there is no such thing as bad luck. It's just how you do things. Like let's say you were riding a bike and you crashed into a bush. That wasn't bad luck it was just how you were steering.

I agree with Jason's dad. I agree because if you make a choice to take chances you will have more oppertunities in life.If you make the choice to not take chances you will miss out on a lot.

I totally agree with Jason's dad. We have control over our life. If you want to live life to the fullest, you make good choices. Let's say that you decided that you didn't want to go to college. You're probably going to end up in a place that you don't want to be in your life.

Mrs.simonds i agree with Jason's dad because you have your own option to take chances but you some time you don't cause your life goes by fast.

I disagree with Jason's dad. I think there is a such thing as luck. Still i do agree with is saying that "Life is what you make it." Even tho luck may throw you off sometimes, you can still control your life.

I agree with Jason's dad. If you make good choices, your life will be a lot easier. If you make bad choices, your life will be more difficult then it needs to be.

I agree with Jason's Dad. I don't think there is bad luck because bad things happen for a reason, not because you make them happen. there isn't good luck because still things happen. If you just got a fish and that your first in a hour ,there's many reasons why they were scared. again things happen or reasons.

I don't know, but I sorta disagree. You can have a lucky day (like winning a soccer tournament) or an unlucky day (like getting an F on your math test). But the reason you won is because you practiced. Of course it could have just been that the other team stunk. So, I think life is what you make of it, but there is a little bit of luck, good or bad. Now, for the math test... let's just say you to study A LOT!

I agree with jasons dad because I think that things happen for a reason not becuase of luck I also think that people have there own reasons to do things.

I seriously don't know. Luck is a total alien thing to me.But on a serious point, you'll meet people out there with mixed views.Views that really make you wonder how it comes to people. Hindu people think your karma inflicts whatever you do. Some people think if you control it ,(life),you're just fine. Some people don't care at all.So my conclusion is that luck is whatever you think it is.

I agree with Jason's dad, because things happen because you do it. Like if you were shooting hoops, you didn't make one shot! It's not bad luck, you might not of been shooting right.

I think that Jason's dad is kind of right, but somethings turn out good, nor bad. In explamation, Jason thinks that theres no luck either, so maybe there is luck in his world!

I agree with Jason's dad because no matter what, everything that ever happens has a reason. Whether it was a mistake, on purpose, or even practice, it was never pure luck....... even flipping a coin, YOU were the one who flipped it! I have never really thought about this topic, and it brings a lot of things I've never thought about to mind.
